“CORRELATION BETWEEN SMOKING BEHAVIOR AND INCIDENCE
OF AMONG HYPERTENSION PT. SEMEN TONASA PANGKEP

BACKGROUND: WHO (World Health Organization) revealed that smokers by
young people is more than 30% in the world. According to WHO and the
International Society of Hypertension (ISH), there are currently 600 million
people with hypertension in the world , and three million (0,5%) of them die every
In Indonesia, problem of hypertension is likely to increase. Based on the
hypertension prevalence and cigarette consumption, cigarette consumption has
contributed to the large, at more then 36% of hypertension case, 25% of them
consume cigarette. This shows cigarettes as a risk factor of hypertension.
The purpose of this study is to observe correlation between smoking behavior and
incidence of among hypertension PT. Semen Tonasa Pangkep employees.
METHODS : This Research used a cross sectional design. The total sample is 80
employes were taken by purposive sampling. Primary data collection performed
by questionnaire and than distributed to all employes who work at the time. The
statistic test used was chi-square.
RESULTS : From 80 (eighty) respondents, there were 12 (twelve) of respondents
had hypertension grade I (15,0%), 1 people had hypertension grade II (1,2%). The
result showed factor associated with the incidence of hypertension is long
cigarette smoking (p=0,045) and the number of cigarettes smoked (p=0,007).
CONCLUSION : There is relation between smooking and hypertension of
employes machining workshop at PT. Semen Tonasa Pangkep Pangkep.
